In Val Gardena, Italy, the wood art tradition dates back to the XVII century, when peasants started manufacturing wood toys and utensils during the long winter season. These wooden items were then sold at spring markets.
During years woodcarvers improved their abilities and skills, and began producing wooden works of high quality and artistic value. Today there are a lot of wood craftsmen in Val Gardena, specialized in the production of woodcarvings of both sacred art and secular art: wooden toys, dolls, rocking horses, wooden Nativity scene figurines, crucifixes, wood sculptures of animal figures, wood carvings of angels, saints, Madonna, Jesus Christ, secular characters, wood cuckoo clocks, bas-reliefs, etc.
Thanks to the great workmanship of the wood artisans, in Val Gardena were also founded many intarsia wood art schools. Masterpieces of master wood sculptors, woodcarvers and wood artisans of Val Gardena are famous all over the world because they are unique pieces of high quality and artistic value.

A group of wood artisans and wood sculptors realized, in Holy Year 2000, the largest woodcarved crib of the world. This wooden crib of extraordinary dimensions (some of its wooden statues are high also 220 cm) is in permanent exhibition in the Iman Center in Santa Cristina di Val Gardena.
Every year, in September, during the Sculpture Fair in Val Gardena (Unika), local wood carvers, wood sculptors and wood artisans expose their original and unique wood art works entirely hand carved.
